‘Futurama’s Next Season Will Focus on This Character’s Backstory

We may be about six weeks out from Futurama’s Season 13 premiere on Hulu, but co-creator David X. Cohen is already light-years ahead of the rest of us.

During the show’s panel at Comic-Con on Saturday, the Futurama overlord teased what fans can expect during the final installment of next year’s 14th season, revealing that he plans on wrapping things up with a deep dive into Fry’s origin story, recounting the protagonist’s early years growing up with his brothers in the late 20th century.

“We are going to work that gold mine a little bit more next year, 2026,” Cohen teased, per Variety

First hitting the airwaves in 1999, Futurama has been canceled and revived several times over the ensuing decades, most recently finding a home at Hulu back in 2022. After completing two seasons with the streamer, the long-running animated series was picked up for a 13th and 14th season in late 2023.

But even with all these repeated revivals — “You are the collective superhero who has saved us so many times in the past,” Cohen told the audience — the team behind the storied show is trying something new this time around, opting to release all 10 episodes at once in a departure from their traditional weekly format.

“This (is) an all-new system we’re going to test out this year — the 10-episode binge-a-thon on September 15th,” Cohen explained before offering fans some tips on how to watch the show’s newest installments. “In case you’ve forgotten — you just sit down, and you watch each episode eight times!” he joked.

Though these multiple starts and stops may seem frustrating, Cohen doesn’t seem to mind. Last year, he shared an unexpected benefit to the show’s rocky schedule, telling Men’s Journal that the breaks often lead to some admittedly morbid inspiration. “Luckily, we get canceled once in a while, which allows real-life technology to catch up and move into the future,” he explained, noting that these changes “inevitably” lead to “horrible problems for the world” while “giving us new funny storylines.”

It may suck for humanity, but hey, thanks to Futurama’s uncanny ability to avoid death/cancellation, at least we’re all able to laugh about it.
